Chalder Farm is situated around the margins of Pagham Harbour Nature Reserve south of Chichester and is a mixture of clover and maize crops grown for silage, and water meadows that the cows graze. This provides a patchwork quilt of wildlife-friendly fields.

The dairy herd is a mixture of breeds including the Brown Swiss which produce a particularly high quality, creamy milk suitable for ice cream. Bulls such as ‘Sir Galahad’ pictured here are used to cross breed cows that produce hardy, easy to manage animals that live longer, and hopefully, happier lives.

The calves are farm reared using milk from the dairy and are weaned onto hay and solid food at around 10 weeks. At two years they are big enough to have calves of their own - they will then join the milking herd to start producing milk. The milk has a butterfat content of 4% and we add cream to produce our delicious ice cream.
